Art & Design

Design is a powerful and influential tool used, typically, to support commercial and economic needs. Through its systematic process, design can challenge the status quo and address distressing cultural problems. The topics discussed in various courses in Graphic Design align with Peace and Justice Studies because it describes nonviolent methods to advocate for positive social change.

Communications

The Peace and Justice Studies Program at ɫapp is an excellent academic companion to an Organizational Communication major. This minor is especially suitable for those students who want to put their communication knowledge and skills to use as an advocate for the causes of peace and justice.

Education

Education majors “work together to transform the classroom, our school systems and the communities around them” through social justice. Peace and Justice Studies enhances this mission by providing candidates with multiple perspectives and strategies for their work in integrating justice into education, and meeting the social and emotional needs of today’s diverse learners.

English Studies

English Studies invites students of literature and language to sharpen their focus so that language and narrative becomes tools for conflict resolution, intellectual exploration, and human flourishing.

Environmental Science

This interdisciplinary field blends science with politics and social justice issues. If students want to understand the source for many global conflicts, they need to delve into environmental science.

History

The study of history is critical to understanding the sources of modern conflicts in the world today, as well as examples of resolutions.

International Relations

The Peace and Justice Studies Program pairs well with an International Relations major (within the Political Science department). It helps students find various just strategies to address war, violence, poverty, human rights violations, and environmental issues.

Justice, Law and Public Safety Studies

The Peace and Justice Studies Program enhances the study of Justice, Law, and Public Safety by offering an expanded definition of peace that includes the prevention and resolution of conflict through the creation of just systems, the promotion of social justice and security from harm for vulnerable populations, and the recognition and appreciation for diversity and multiculturalism.

Music

Peace and Justice Studies grants music and musicians the ability to affect change and contribute to the construction of both individual and collective identities thus underscoring the role that studying music has in understanding concepts related to community building, social justice, and peace, broadly defined.

Philosophy

Ahimsa or nonviolence is the core of philosophical existence. For Philosophy, ahimsa is seen by grasping, resisting, and changing class structures that reduce people to things and thereby impede human development.

Physics

Physicists work on many complex issues related to PJS such as nuclear non-proliferation, peaceful applications of nuclear energy, and climate change and climate change mitigation technologies. Physicists also apply their analysis techniques to study complex social and educational issues like scientific literacy and diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.

Political Science

Political Science, combined with the Peace and Justice Studies Program, helps students understand the conditions of human flourishing an dhow government policies and programs could contribute to social change and justice in our communities.

Psychology

The Peace and Justice Studies Program can enhance the Psychology and/or Human Resource Management major regarding issues such as gender equality, human development, and social development.

Social Work

The Peace and Justice Studies Program is an ideal complement to a Social Work major, since "“social work students engage in an education that is dedicated to advancing social and economic justice and the wellbeing and quality of life of individuals, groups, and families."”

Sociology

Sociology offers insights into the nature and causes of conflicts and promotes social change and social justice. These are essential to conflict transformation and peacebuilding.

Theatre

Great works of art, theatre performances among them, have been inspired by a desire to improve life’s conditions for their audiences and their communities: to bring serenity and perspective, empathy and insight, and to arouse specific action with oppressed people toward justice and equity.

Theology

Combining the Peace and Justice Studies Program with a Theology major invites students to critically engage with Catholic intellectual tradition and social teaching, Christian ethics, interfaith dialogue, and/or various spiritualities and religious worldviews in their peacebuilding work. Students learn to apply the diverse content and methods of studying religion to a full spectrum of vocations as engaged global citizens.
